The MCV Gates “Faithful to the Past” Sticker honors one of Norwich University’s most enduring symbols and the meaning behind the words:
“Let All Who Enter Through This Gate Be Faithful to the Past”
The gates were dedicated in 1919, marking Norwich University’s 100th anniversary following its founding in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge. As a centennial gift, they were more than an entrance. They were a reminder that every new generation entering Norwich was becoming part of something already a century old.
By 1919, Norwich had already endured enormous change. The institution had survived early struggles, the devastating 1866 fire, and the eventual relocation to Northfield. The gates became a symbol of continuity through that history.
And that is what “Faithful to the Past” still means.
It does not mean standing still.
It does not mean refusing to evolve.
It means that as people, institutions, and traditions change, the values and principles at their core should remain steady.
You can adapt.
You can grow.
You can move forward.
But the principles that shaped you should never waver.
Honor. Duty. Loyalty. Service.
