NORTHFIELD, VERMONT • DOG RIVER VALLEY

Northfield sits in the heart of Vermont’s Green Mountains, tucked into the narrow Dog River Valley between the Northfield Range to the west and the hills around Paine Mountain to the east. The Dog River winds north through the community, a defining part of the landscape that has shaped Northfield from its earliest days.

Chartered in 1781, Northfield grew along the river valley, where early mills harnessed its water and transportation routes followed its natural path. The Paine Turnpike came through the valley in 1799, followed by the Vermont Central Railroad in 1847, helping turn the small village into an important Central Vermont community. Today, the river, surrounding mountains, historic village, covered bridges, and Norwich University give Northfield a character that is unmistakably Vermont.

Our Northfield, VT Dog River Valley sticker celebrates that place. The Dog River runs through the center of the design, surrounded by the layered Green Mountains that define the valley and the view generations of Norwich students, alumni, families, and Northfield residents have called home. For the Norwich community, the river has an added connection as the setting for the traditional Dog River Run during Rook training.

And there’s another reason we wanted to make it. For a town that welcomes thousands of Norwich families, alumni, and visitors, Northfield has had very few places offering Vermont-themed gifts and keepsakes. We think you should be able to take home a little piece of Vermont without having to leave Northfield to find it.

Northfield isn’t just where Norwich is located. It’s part of the Norwich experience.
