NU SKI AREA - 3" STICKER
A smaller version of one of our most popular stickers, celebrating a piece of Norwich history that generations of alumni still remember.
Our NU Ski Area sticker is based on a popular patch from the ski area's heyday and brings back the simple, unmistakable skier design associated with winter on Paine Mountain. This new 3-inch version offers the same design as our original 4-inch sticker in a slightly more modest size, perfect for water bottles, laptops, coolers, ski gear and anywhere else where four inches is just a little too much real estate.
Skiing at Norwich has deep roots. The university's first ski club dates to 1899, and a ski jump was built on Paine Mountain in 1923. A rope tow followed in 1936, with increasingly ambitious improvements over the decades. A Poma lift arrived in the early 1960s, and in 1970 Norwich dramatically expanded the mountain with a double chairlift, additional trails, and public access. University records described it at the time as one of the largest on-campus ski facilities in the country.
For Norwich students in the 1970s and '80s, the ski area became part of campus life. You could finish class and be skiing on Paine Mountain minutes later. The mountain offered roughly 900 feet of vertical, with terrain ranging from beginner slopes to trails like Liftline, Upper Glades, Stagecoach, Bull Run, and Wildcat.
The chairlift made its final runs following the 1991–92 season. Inconsistent natural snowfall, the expense of operating the mountain, and the cost and difficulty of adding snowmaking ultimately brought more than half a century of lift-served skiing at Norwich to an end. Today, Paine Mountain remains part of the Norwich outdoor experience through the trails surrounding the Shaw Outdoor Center.
