VERMONT MOOSE - FLAG OF THE GREEN MOUNTAIN BOYS
Few designs could be more unmistakably Vermont.
At its foundation is the historic Flag of the Green Mountain Boys, the militia associated with Ethan Allen and the earliest struggle to determine the future of the land that would become Vermont. The Green Mountain Boys first organized amid the disputes over the New Hampshire Grants, and Ethan Allen became their best-known leader. In May 1775, Allen and the Green Mountain Boys joined Benedict Arnold in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, one of the first major American successes of the Revolutionary War.
The historic banner is remembered for its distinctive green field and blue canton scattered with thirteen white stars, representing the thirteen American colonies. Rather than the orderly rows we associate with later American flags, the stars appear almost like a constellation. The design remains so closely connected with Vermont that state law calls for the Green Mountain Boys flag to be flown at the Vermont State House each January 15 in recognition of Vermont's independence.
Our design takes those elements and turns them into something new. The deep blue star field flows into the silhouette of a Vermont moose, while the green portion carries the landscape of the Green Mountains and evergreen forests across its body. The transition from mountain landscape to star field brings Vermont's natural character and its independent history together in a single image.
